One of the 12 main church holidays - the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God - is celebrated today by Orthodox believers, RIA Novosti reports.

This day is considered a day of worldwide joy  in the Russian Orthodox Church.

According to legend, the Mother of God was born in the Galilean city of Nazareth. Christians are sure that the birth of the Virgin Mary testifies to the beginning of the era when the words of God about the salvation of mankind began to be fulfilled. Worshippers also believe that this event brought the Kingdom of God closer to the Earth.

The Mother of God has always been especially revered in Russia. Her birthday fell at the end of the harvest period, and the festivities usually lasted for several days.
