World Day of Russian Unity is celebrated on Tuesday, September 21, the Voennoye Obozreniye newspaper reports. Representatives of the Russian diaspora and lovers of Russian culture in abroad organize various events to celebrate this unofficial holiday.

The holiday is celebrated in more than 20 countries. The idea of establishing the date was put forward more than 10 years ago by compatriots from Kyrgyzstan during a youth forum in St. Petersburg. The idea came from the Russian Unification Union of Compatriots.

The date of the holiday was not chosen by chance. There is a theory that September 21 can be considered the day of the founding of Russia: on this day in 862 the unification of Russian tribes began. Moreover, on September 21, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. The great Russian city Veliky Novgorod was also founded on this day in 859.

A birch tree was chosen as a symbol of the holiday, since it is widely associated with Russian culture and nature. This day promotes the popularization of the identity of the Russian people and the preservation of historical and cultural values, the development of language, literature, modern achievements of science and technology.

The Russkiy Mir Foundation is actively promoting Russian culture and supporting Russians in many countries. Russian Centers and Russian World Offices operate in more than 100 countries.
