The developers of the Sputnik V vaccine have modified it for the delta strain of coronavirus infection, Interfax reports. The head of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gintsburg, said that the new version of the vaccine is ready for use.

The scientist believes that it is too early to assess the degree of effectiveness of this version of the drug.

He added that the high mortality rate from the disease in Russia is associated with the delta strain. It takes 10 to 14 days for our immune system to develop antibodies, he said. For people who are not vaccinated, with the "delta" strain, the infectious process lasts four to five days, the immune system simply does not have time to react.

Alexander Gunzburg believes that the virus is likely to continue mutating. But it is now impossible to predict whether the new variants of COVID-19 will be even more dangerous.

The Gamaleya Center believes that a combination of Pfizer and Sputnik Light vaccines will help increase the level of protection against the delta strain. Earlier, the Russian center offered joint trials to Pfizer. Russian scientists believe that the use of Sputnik Light as a third component (after two injections of Pfizer) will enhance the protective effect.
