Russian diplomats in the United States brought flowers to a memorial erected in honor of Russian sailors, the Russian-speaking diaspora in Switzerland writes on its Facebook page.

The memorial ceremony took place in San Francisco. Representatives of the Russian embassy gathered at a plaque commemorating the sailors of the Russian-American Trading Company. They died away from their native land in the first half of the 19th century.

The place where they were buried in the Californian city gave the name to the whole area. It still bears the name The Russian Hill.

In addition, a memorial ceremony took place at the cemetery of Mare Island. It is located a few dozen kilometers from San Francisco. There are the graves of the sailors of the Russian Imperial Navy. Six burials date back to 1863 and belong to the sailors of the Pacific squadron of Rear Admiral Andrei Popov, and two graves appeared here in 1904 and 1905, when the Lena cruiser was being repaired at local shipyards.
