ROC: Russian athletes showed their true Olympic spirit

The Tokyo Olympic Games ended up triumphantly for Russian athletes, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), told RIA Novosti. The closing ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games was held in Tokyo yesterday. It was held without spectators due to restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

At the Tokyo Olympics, 339 sets of awards were played. The Russian national team took fifth place in the medal standings. USA edged China, earning the first place in medal count, Japan took the third position, followed by the Great Britain. 

Russian athletes were performing as an ROC team due to the Court of Arbitration for Sport sanctions. Nonetheless unfavorable situation, they won 71 medals and took fifth place in the medal standings. In total, Russia has got 20 gold, 28 silver and 23 bronze medals.

The head of the ROC Stanislav Pozdnyakov noted that national athletes have won the highest number of medals since 2004. According to him, the national team, which arrived at the Games "as a disparate team of professional, well-trained Olympic athletes," "flies away as a team of heroes."
