The role of Woland in the film of the same name based on Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita will be played by an actor from Germany August Diehl, RIA Novosti reports. He starred in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. He is also known for his work in the action movie Salt, where he played along with Angelina Jolie, and in other films.

According to the actor, it is his first shooting in Russia and he is looking forward to it. August Diehl said that before filming, he read Bulgakov's work once again and noticed that the book opens in a new way with each reading. The actor called Woland one of the most interesting characters in the novel.

According to screenwriter Roman Kantor, he wanted Woland to resemble as much as possible the image created by the writer. In the novel, he is a foreigner with a German accent, seemingly more than 40 years old. He wanted to convey the striking contrast between him and the rest of the characters, Kantor explained.

The shooting of The Woland began in Moscow in July. The film crew will work until early November. It is planned that the filming location will be not only the Russian capital, but also St. Petersburg. Filming will also take place in Malta.

The director is Mikhail Lokshin. The main roles are played by Yulia Snigir and Yevgeny Tsyganov.
