The law on indigenous peoples, recently passed by the Ukrainian parliament, is being scrutinized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). OHCHR spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell promised that the agency would closely monitor its implementation, TASS reports.

She recalled that the document for the first time introduces the concept of "indigenous peoples" into the country's legislative base. Therefore, the importance of its compliance with international human rights standards cannot be overestimated. It is necessary that the law serves to strengthen the rights of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, Elisabeth Throssell specified.

As Russkiy Mir reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine, which included Crimean Tatars, a Muslim ethnic minority,  Karaites and Krymchaks, who practice Judaism. Russians were left out of the indigenous people list.

The new law guarantees indigenous peoples the right to establish their own educational institutions and study in their own language, to create their own media. The law also notes that the state guarantees their protection from acts of genocide and any other acts of violence.
