The Russian delegation to PACE protested against the law on indigenous peoples, adopted by the Ukrainian parliament the day before. Deputies from Serbia, Hungary, Armenia and Moldova backed Russia's position, TASS reports.

According to the head of the delegation, Pyotr Tolstoy, there is no doubt that other countries will be also dissatisfied with Kiev's actions. The Russian politician is sure that many have retained the memory of the possible consequences of segregation. The steps of the Verkhovna Rada must not be allowed to go unanswered, the diplomat is convinced.

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine, which included Crimean Tatars, a Muslim ethnic minority,  Karaites and Krymchaks, who practice Judaism. Russians were left out of the indigenous people list.

The new law guarantees indigenous peoples the right to establish their own educational institutions and study in their own language, to create their own media. The law also notes that the state guarantees their protection from acts of genocide and any other acts of violence.
