About 100 Russian citizens are currently serving sentences in American prisons, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. According to her, 17 citizens of the United States are imprisoned in Russia, RIA Novosti reports.

During the summit, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden touched upon the issue of prisoner exchange. Putin noted that the two countries can reach a compromise on this issue.

Earlier, Putin noted that Washington had been ''catching'' Russian citizens in other countries and imprisoning them for many years. He called these actions by the United States "a violation of all norms of international law." According to the Russian leader, there are also Americans in Russia who have been convicted of crimes, but their number is incomparable with the number of Russians in American prisons.

Maria Zakharova recalled that many Americans who are in our country also have a Russian passport.
