The monument of the first cosmonaut of the planet Yuri Gagarin adorned the Spanish capital, RIA Novosti reports. It is installed opposite the central entrance to the Madrid Planetarium. Its opening took place on Tuesday, June 8.

The honorary guests of the ceremony were the Russian Ambassador to Spain Yuri Korchagin and the Mayor of Madrid Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida. The monument was presented to the city by the Russian embassy and the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo.

The opening ceremony at the planetarium was timed to coincide with the beginning of the exhibition, which tells about the flight of Gagarin, and the life of the first cosmonaut. The exposition was introduced to the guests by the director of the planetarium, astrophysicist Telmo Fernandez. The planetarium also showed documentaries about Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova.
