Russia celebrates centenary of world-famous scientist Andrei Sakharov

The centenary of the birth of the famous scientist and public figure Andrei Sakharov is celebrated on Friday, May 21, TASS reports. Many cities will host commemorative events, including exhibitions, concerts, flower-laying ceremonies.

The future famous physicist was born in Moscow. He is one of the creators of the world's first hydrogen bomb (RDS-6s) and the most powerful hydrogen bomb in history. For his work in science, he was awarded the Star of the Hero of Socialist Labor 3 times. However, in the 1980s he was stripped of this title for his human rights work.

He protested against nuclear weapons testing and wars. Andrei Sakharov headed the movement of human rights defenders in the Soviet Union, opposed the death penalty, supported the right to emigrate.

In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the field of human rights.

The ''Sakharov. Two lives" documentary is going to premiere this year. The film will be screened by the online cinema KION, which created the project. The uniqueness of the film is that the narration is conducted on behalf of Andrei Sakharov through the use of his memories and statements.

The authors of the film, timed to coincide with the centenary of the scientist, are Ivan Proskuryakov and Roman Super, actors Alexey Usoltsev and Chulpan Khamatova are involved in the film. The film became one of the first major film projects dedicated to Sakharov. The creators noted that the film tells about the scientific and human rights activities of the scientist and does not contain unambiguous judgments. The film includes excerpts from the memoirs of Andrei Sakharov, declassified video materials from the archives of the Russian special services are also used. Viewers will see photographs and footage of the shooting, including previously unpublished ones.

Channel One has prepared another premiere. Director Elena Yakovich worked on the film for a year, filming took place not only in Russia, the United States and Great Britain. Sakharov's family history was told by his daughter, cousin, granddaughter, as well as the children of his wife. The film contains many household details, family albums and letters.

The day before, the ''Sakharov. New century" exhibition. It is dedicated to the 9 most important events in the life of the hero of the day. According to the organizers, the exposition represents the transformation of an outstanding physicist into a dissident and human rights activist.

The exhibition will run until June 20.

A special website was created for the anniversary of Andrei Sakharv. The website contains information about more than 100 events included in the program of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the scientist.
