A series of events have opened in Bulgaria in honor of the 143rd anniversary of Russia's liberation from the Ottoman yoke with a memorial service and the laying of flowers at the monument to doctors who became victims of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. The event was attended by Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova, TASS reports.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President of Bulgaria Iliyana Yotova called on the day of the anniversary of the country's liberation from the yoke to thank everyone who helped the country to preserve its language and faith. The Russian ambassador said that she saw a manifestation of sincere feelings of the Bulgarians towards the Russians at the monument to doctors. Eleonora Mirofanova stressed that the holiday of liberation in Bulgaria has no political overtones.

The celebration of the memorable date will continue on March 3. At the Freedom Monument at the historic height of Shipka, flowers will be laid in honor of the Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of Bulgaria. It is planned to take part in the event of the country's President Rumen Radev and other high-ranking officials of Bulgaria.

Russia's participation in the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule is undeniable, the country became free after the conclusion of a peace treaty signed by the Russian ambassador to Constantinople Nikolai Ignatiev.
