Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reproached the Council of Europe for the lack of a proper response to discrimination against the Russian language and Russian-speaking residents of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, according to the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Russian Foreign Minister said this in his message to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Peichinovic-Buric. It was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Russia's participation in the Council of Europe.

The head of Russia's diplomatic department stressed that the international organization prefers to turn a blind eye to cases of outright discrimination. In his opinion, this undermines the authority of the Council of Europe.

Sergey Lavrov expressed confidence that the organization, which was created after the Second World War, cannot remain silent in response to the manifestations of historical revisionism and the glorification of Nazi accomplices.

Six months ago, Kiev stepped up the process of squeezing languages out of education and other spheres of life. This is precisely what the adoption of laws on education and the state language led to. At the same time, the minister recalled, in comparison with the languages of other national minorities, the Russian language, which is considered native by about half of the inhabitants of Ukraine, was subjected to additional discrimination. Sergey Lavrov added that Kiev left some concessions for European languages.
