More than 30,000 schoolchildren in Syria are studying Russian, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency. They are taking part in an experiment aimed at popularizing the Russian language. It began seven years ago, when the Russian language was included in the school curriculum.

To date, the pilot project has covered more than 200 schools located in 12 provinces. Nevertheless, according to the program coordinator Bassam At-Tawil, even seven years later, a significant problem remains: there is an extreme shortage of Russian language teachers. Today their number does not reach 200.

The Syrian Education Authority is training existing staff. It also seeks to provide them with grants to travel to Russia to specialize more in the language and teaching methods, in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Education.
