The exhibition, timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the work of Soviet archaeologists under the leadership of Boris Piotrovsky in Egypt, began work in the Moscow Museum of the East. Outstanding scientists who were part of the expedition found and described many monuments and valuable finds. Ties between the countries in the archaeological area have survived to this day, Russian specialists participate in a number of expeditions in different regions of Egypt, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper reports.

The Nubian expedition took place as part of an operation under the auspices of UNESCO to save the monuments of Egyptian history, which could have been lost during the flooding of the reservoir. According to experts, the discovered monuments could shed light on the birth of Egyptian civilization and other issues related to the history of Egypt.

Soviet archaeologists went to the area of future flooding at the request of the leadership of Egypt and Sudan, who could not independently conduct archaeological research. The expedition became the first large scientific trip for Soviet archaeologists to North Africa and the Middle East; it opened a series of expeditions to these regions.

During the two winter seasons, Soviet specialists discovered many finds and monuments on the border of the two African countries, ranging from Paleolithic sites to the New Kingdom of Egypt. Some of the finds, in agreement with Cairo, were sent to the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum. The exposition includes exhibits from the collections of these museums: ceramics, photographs, drawings and diaries of the participants in the excavations.
