Science Day celebrated in Russia

Science Day is celebrated on February 8 in Russia, the holiday was established by the decree of the President of Russia in 1999. On this day in 1724, Peter the Great issued a decree on the establishment of the Academy of Sciences, the Parliamentary Gazette newspaper writes.

Russian scientists of the world level include Mikhail Lomonosov, Dmitry Mendeleev, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Pyotr Kapitsa, Igor Kurchatov, Sergei Korolev. The doctrine of the biosphere was developed by Russian researchers. Russia became a pioneer in space exploration, launching the first artificial satellite and sending the first man into space. The world's first nuclear power plant was also built in Russia.

Among the Nobel laureates are Russian and Soviet scientists. In 1904 Ivan Pavlov received it for his research on the physiology of digestion. In 1908, Ilya Mechnikov was awarded for his work on immunity. Physicist Pyotr Kapitsa was awarded in 1978 for the discovery of the phenomenon of superfluidity of liquid helium.

Today, the structure of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) includes 13 departments, a dozen regional research centers, and numerous institutes. More than 200 world-class laboratories have been created under the grant program. In total, the Academy has over 1,000 scientific institutions.

The start of the Year of Science and Technology in the country is timed to coincide with the Day of Russian Science. The decree on its holding was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of last December.
