Germany confirmed its intention to provide assistance to the surviving residents of besieged Leningrad. This is written in a statement issued by the German embassy on the Day of the complete lifting of the siege, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper writes.

The embassy called the siege of Leningrad an act of cruelty directed against the whole city and its population. On January 27, 1944, the period of death, hunger and suffering came to an end, which claimed more than a million human lives, and lasted almost 900 days.

Germany plans to allocate twelve million euros for the reconstruction of the hospital for war veterans, as well as for the creation of a Russian-German Meeting Center in St. Petersburg. The hospital received the first batch of medical equipment in the summer of 2020.

The embassy assured that the pandemic would not interfere with the project. Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation called on Germany to appoint payments to the siege survivors of all nationalities. For a long time, Berlin allocated financial aid only to the Jewish survivors of the siege. This is contrary to the principles of justice and equality and is blatant discrimination against non-Jewish siege survivovrs, the ministry noted.
