The number of Orthodox believers in Russia who celebrated Epiphany exceeded 1.2 million people. They came to churches for services and joined the Epiphany bathing, TASS reports.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs added that more than 9,500 religious events were held in honor of the holiday. During their conduct, the order was ensured by the police and officers of the Russian Guard. Representatives of private security organizations, people's guards and public formations worked with them. There were no violations of public order.

As Russkiy Mir reported earlier, one of the traditions of the holiday is dipping into an ice-hole, which is called Jordan. It is believed that bathing in ice water helps to get rid of sins and protects from disease. At the same time, swimming in an ice hole is a folk tradition. The Church does not consider it obligatory.
