More than 9,500 foreigners from 147 countries took part in the 2nd International Online Olympiad, organized by St. Petersburg State University together with the Ministry of Education of Russia. The Olympiad has become the largest among the tournaments for knowledge of Russian as a foreign language, according to the university website.

The Olympiad was joined by participants from different parts of the world - from Argentina to Japan. They were offered tasks to test their knowledge of the Russian language. The Olympiad was divided into qualifying and final rounds, 940 participants from 80 countries entered the decisive stage.

The participants reportedly sought to test their knowledge of the Russian language and prove that their efforts were not in vain. Those who have shown the best result will be able to pass the international exam in Russian as a foreign language (TORFL) free of charge, as well as receive bonus points upon admission to St. Petersburg State University.

The participants were divided into two age groups: students aged 12–16 years old competed in the youngest, and young people 17–30 years old in the older one.
