Thousands of Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of the territory of Slovakia have acquired names, RIA Novosti reports. They were applied to the plates installed at the central war memorial in the Slovak city of Zvolen.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, a total of 120 memorial plaques immortalized the memory of 11 327 heroes who died.

The military department noted that work on compiling a list of names had been carried out for more than two years. It was required to investigate the materials stored in the archives of the Ministry of Defense and other documents.

During the preparation, historical and modern maps of Slovakia were compared. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense constantly worked with the appeals of the descendants of the war veterans who liberated Slovakia from the Nazi occupation.

In the cemetery in Zvolen there are more than 300 single and almost 20 mass graves. 17,280 Soviet soldiers are buried there. The memorial cemetery was opened in 1946. Here, after the war, the remains of soldiers and officers of the Red Army from the surrounding areas were reburied.
