Three exhibitions dedicated to ancient Palmyra will open in the Hermitage at once, TASS reports. They will begin work on December 2, which was declared the Day of Palmyra at the museum.

According to Mikhail Piotrovsky, Director of the Hermitage, this event was planned to be held within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. Despite the fact that the coronavirus pandemic forced the organizers to abandon the forum, Palmyra Day will still take place. Its main goal will be a scientific discussion of the future restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A round table with the participation of international experts will be timed to the day. A broad discussion of the topic of protection of monuments is planned.

Discussion participants and other visitors can visit three exhibitions. The first one is titled “Two Palmyras. Archeology ”will present archaeological finds made in Palmyra, which are kept in the collection of the largest Russian museum.

The second exposition “Two Palmyras. Architecture" will  compare St. Petersburg, which is often called "Northern Palmyra "with the ancient city. Mikhail Piotrovsky recalled that it was Palmyra which influenced the sketches of the great Carlo Rossi, who was building the General Staff building.

One of the central exhibits of the exhibition "Two Palmyras: Real and Virtual" will be a 3D model of Palmyra. It is made on the basis of territory scanning materials. There will also be shown a model of the Bela temple, which was made in two stages: a complete reconstruction and a state on the eve of destruction. Using the application, one can walk around the temple. Fragments of architectural monuments of Palmyra, recreated by modern masters, will also be shown.
