Moscow plans to develop cooperation with Damascus in the educational sphere, TASS reports. The head of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin ordered to hold talks with the Syrian authorities on this issue.

Russian is taught in Syrian schools, where it can be studied as a foreign language in addition to English and French. There is an increase in the demand for Russian language courses in Syrian universities. It is reported that it is planned to open Russian language courses in Aleppo for those wishing to enter Russian universities.

Earlier, the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society was given 10,000 square meters of land in Damascus. They plan to build a Russian university there. According to the chairman of the IOPS Sergei Stepashin, initially the site was allocated for the construction of a Russian school in Damascus, but the society decided to repair the existing building to accommodate an educational institution. The building for the Russian school in the Syrian capital has already been prepared; the project is being implemented by the IOPS and the Russian Orthodox Church.
