Russia celebrates National Unity Day on Wednesday, November 4, TASS reports. This holiday is one of the youngest, the country celebrates it for the 15th time. It is dedicated to the events of 1612, when national heroes Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky gathered the people's militia and drove the Poles out of Moscow. Historically, the holiday is associated with the end of the Time of Troubles in Russia in the 17th century; it has become a symbol of the rallying of the people and their ability to unite in difficult times. Later, November 4 in the church calendar became the day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God - the patroness of the militia.

Traditionally, the head of state on this day lays flowers at the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. The award ceremony for the contribution to strengthening the unity of the Russian nation and the Order of Friendship is timed to coincide with the holiday.

Unfortunately, this year, due to a difficult epidemiological situation, the celebrations had to be canceled. According to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, today is not the best time for mass events. Nevertheless, some celebrations will take place. In particular, Vladimir Putin will talk with representatives of religious confessions. The meeting will be held online.

In honor of the holiday, in some cities, the TV towers will be decorated with lighting in the colors of the Russian tricolor, in particular on the Ostankino TV tower in Moscow, as well as in Perm, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Samara, Grozny, Rostov, Saransk, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula, Veliky Novgorod, Kyzyl, Voronezh , Ryazan, Penza, Nalchik, Stavropol and Kazan.
