German tennis player Daniel Altmaier, to the surprise of many sports fans from different countries, turned out to be Russian-speaking. After winning the third round of one of the main and oldest tournaments in world tennis, the French Roland-Garros, the German thanked his family in Russian, the website of the World Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots reports.

"Thank you for everything, I love you very much!" - said Altmaier, addressing his family after the victory over the Italian Matteo Berrettini in the third round of Roland-Garros. As it turned out, the athlete grew up in a Russian family, his mother is from Russia, and his father is Ukrainian, who passed his last name to his son.

In the same interview, the athlete also said in German: “Thank you all,” probably referring to fans from Germany. The joy of the 22-year-old tennis player is understandable, in the very first tournament in the prestigious Grand Slam series he managed to go through three rounds.
