Orthodox believers on Monday, September 21, celebrate one of the most significant religious holidays - the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos or the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, TASS reports. The day before, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, led a service in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

This day in the Russian Orthodox Church is considered a day of world joy. In folk tradition, today is considered the beginning of autumn. The Nativity of the Mother of God did not immediately become a holiday for the Orthodox. It began to be celebrated only in the 5th century.

According to a legend, the Mother of God was born in the Galilean city of Nazareth. Christians are sure that the birth of the Virgin Mary testifies to the beginning of that era when the words of God about the salvation of mankind began to be fulfilled. Worshippers also believe that this event brought the Kingdom of God closer.

The Mother of God has always been especially revered in Russia. Her birthday falls at the end of the harvest, and the festivities usually lasted several days.
