Monument to Soviet soldiers restored in Norway

Russian diplomats and compatriots living in Norway took part in the inauguration of a restored monument at the burial place of Soviet soldiers in the cemetery of Mo i Rana (Norway). Local authorities noted the role of Soviet soldiers in liberating Europe from the Nazis, according to the Russian Consulate General in Kirkenes.

Russian Consul General Nikolai Konygin thanked the Norwegian authorities for taking care of the monuments to Soviet soldiers, as well as for preserving and passing on knowledge about the events of the war years to new generations. The mayor of Mo i Rana, Mr. Vaage, said that the residents of the city is grateful to the Red Army soldiers who died for peace and freedom, for their sacrificial feat.

A memorial service was held in the local church, candles were lit "in memory of the fallen Soviet soldiers, their brotherhood with the Norwegians, in the name of the future and good unity of the Norwegian and Russian peoples." Russian Consul Nikolai Konygin visited the local museum, got acquainted with the exhibits and materials telling about the prisoner of war camps on the territory of the region.
