The Polish prosecutor's office decided that it was necessary to arrest the air traffic controllers who worked in 2010 at the Smolensk airfield during the plane crash where the plane with Polish President Lech Kaczynski on board crashed. The investigation group has applied to the court with a corresponding request, RIA Novosti reports. The dispatchers are accused of allegedly provoking a catastrophe that led to the death of many people.

The prosecutor's office explained that this appeal is the first step in the process of issuing an international arrest warrant. If the court upholds the petition, the next step will be to detain the air traffic controllers.

Russia has already announced that it will not hand over the air traffic controllers to the Polish side. Senator Andrei Klimov noted that this is prohibited by the provisions of the Russian Constitution.

The investigation of the plane crash near Smolensk remains one of the stumbling blocks in relations between Moscow and Warsaw. Earlier, the commission of the Ministry of Defense of Poland, re-examining the circumstances of the plane crash, concluded that there were several explosions on board. Allegedly, explosives were planted in the plane during repairs in Russia. Before that, Poland had tried to accuse Russian air traffic controllers of allegedly provoking the plane crash.  Russia denies all these accusations.
