Monument to Yuri Gagarin installed in Uruguay

A portrait sculpture of the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, created by the sculptor Alexei Leonov, was unveiled in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. The city received the statue as a gift from the Dialogue of Cultures - One World international foundation, the project was implemented with the support of the Russian Embassy in Uruguay and the Rossotrudnichestvo office in Argentina.

The event was attended by the Russian Ambassador to Uruguay Nikolai Sofinsky, representatives of the Montevideo mayor's office, the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Uruguay, Uruguayan diplomats, cultural figures, businessmen and Russian compatriots living in the country.

According to Sofinsky, the opening of the bust to the first cosmonaut in the history of mankind has symbolic significance for Russia and Uruguay, and helps to strengthen relations between countries.

Earlier, monuments to Yuri Gagarin were erected in Moldova and in Croatia. Last year, the portrait sculptures of Gagarin appeared in Cleveland, Bucharest, Kathmandu, and La Punta. In addition, the sculpture was donated to the Laos Academy of Sciences.
