The memory of the Soviet test pilot Rimantas Stankevicius was immortalized in Italy. The plaque was erected in Salgareda, located in the north-east of the country, where he died. The ceremony was timed to coincide with the anniversary of his death, TASS reports.

Leading test pilot of the Gromov Flight Research Institute died on September 9, 1990 during a demonstration flight at the Salgared air show. The Su-27 plane that he piloted collapsed, but the pilot did not eject, as the failed plane could fall on the people below.

Stankevicius was buried at home, in Lithuania.

Russian compatriots, Italian pilots and aviation fans made a proposal to create a memorial sign in Italy. Their idea was supported by the city authorities.

The memorial plaque was brought from Russia. A concert and an exhibition of aircraft models were organized during the opening ceremony.
