Organizations of Russian compatriots in Ireland held a solemn ceremony in Castlebar in memory of the victims of World War II together with representatives of local authorities and a veteran organization at the Irish Defense Department, Russianireland.com reports.

The ceremony took place at the World War II memorial in County Mayo. The action was inspired by the organizations of Russian compatriots and the Russian Ireland cultural association, as well as the Matryoshka Russian school.

In addition to compatriots, the ceremony was attended by the head of Castlebar, Blaki Gawin, Senator Gerard Croghwell, representatives of the Veterans' Society of the Irish Defense Department and the British Legion in Ireland.

The speakers expressed their support for the activities and initiatives of Russian compatriots to preserve the historical memory of the heroes of World War II. They also spoke about the USSR's merits in the defeat of fascism.

As part of the ceremony, the organizers recalled the assistance to the Soviet Union provided by the Irish during the war years in the framework of the Arctic convoys. An important part of the ceremony was the opening of the Immortal Regiment exposition, which included photographs of the warring ancestors of Russian compatriots living in Ireland.
