An expeditionary unit of the Northern Fleet confirmed the existence of an island in the Vilkitsky Bay, discovered by a group of Russian highschoolers during the analysis of satellite images. The island was photographed; unfavorable ice conditions prevented landing on it, the website of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) reports.

The news of the discovery of a new island in the Arctic by a group of schoolchildren appeared in July. It was reported that the team included eight students from St. Petersburg, Tula, Yakutsk and other cities of Russia.

The young researchers analyzed satellite images under the guidance of RUDN University associate professor Alexei Kucheiko. They found that the island was created by the collapse of the ice bridge between the North Island and the glacier. With the advent of information about the new island, the leadership of the Arctic expedition adjusted its route, and the participants were able to confirm the discovery of the schoolchildren.

The explorers have decided to name the new island with an area of more than 5,5 hectares after the cosmonaut German Titov.
