Russian compatriots living in Mauritius have joined volunteer groups that are fighting the consequences of the environmental disaster. In August, a Japanese bulk carrier crashed off the coast of the island. As a result, about a thousand tons of fuel oil and engine oil were in the water, according to the Compatriots in the Republic of Mauritius group on Facebook.

Russian compatriots take an active part in the work of volunteer squads, which around the clock, replacing each other, create booms to save the coastline. Volunteers also pump out oil products.

Olga Bogacheva, Chair of the Coordinating Council of Organizations of Russian Compatriots, noted compatriots' immediate response to the disaster. According to her, almost all compatriots have joined in the work - some are involved in water purification, others help with the necessary materials and donate money, and others prepare meals for volunteers. Olga Bogacheva expressed the hope that joint efforts would help to cope with the consequences of the disaster.
