120 residents of African countries took part in two online seminars included in the large-scale program called Distant Russian in Africa ("Remote study of the Russian language in Africa"). The two-week course was organized by the Institute of Russian Language and Culture of Moscow State University and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Tanzania, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper reports.

Classes were taught by 14 Russian language teachers from Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Mauritius and Madagascar. The project also included a special seminar to help teachers improve their qualifications.

Seminars on the Russian language became part of the cooperation, which the parties agreed on during the Russia-Africa summit in the autmn of 2019. According to Valery Chastnykh, deputy director of the Institute of Russian Language and Culture of Moscow State University, training of personnel who speak Russian in African countries  is necessary for effective cooperation between the parties in various fields.

120 residents of the countries of East Africa - Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Madagascar and others - took part in free seminars on the Russian language. According to Chastnykh, the organizers did not count on such interest in the project, which was practically not advertised due to lack of time.

Most of the course participants started learning Russian from scratch; teachers used English as an intermediary language. The purpose of the program was to interest Africans in learning Russian. After two weeks of classes, students can speak about themselves, their country, work and hobbies.
