The Russian Foreign Ministry posted on its Facebook page a virtual exhibition timed to coincide with the Day of Russian-Peruvian Solidarity.
On this day, 50 years ago, a Soviet plane An-22 crashed over the Atlantic Ocean, which was delivering humanitarian aid to the inhabitants of Peru who suffered from the earthquake.

An earthquake in Peru in 1970 led to huge casualties - 70,000 people died, about 800,000 people were left homeless. The Soviet Union immediately came to the aid of the country, with which it established diplomatic relations a year before the tragedy.

USSR sent to Peru, not only humanitarian supplies, but also doctors, military men, engineers, labor detachments of volunteers. About 60 tons of equipment were deployed to provide assistance in the field. Soviet specialists were able to provide treatment for tens of thousands of patients, as well as help in the construction of destroyed settlements.

The photographs presented at the online exhibition show the scale of Soviet aid, the work of doctors and builders from the USSR in the earthquake sites, performances of Soviet artists who flew in to support the Peruvians.
