Aerospace engineer Pavel Sukhoi born 125 years ago

An outstanding aircraft designer, founder of Soviet jet and supersonic technology Pavel Sukhoi was born 125 years ago. In 1953-1975, a series of aircraft of a unique design was created under Sukhoi's command. Those aircrafts became the flagships of the fighter-bomber and assault aviation of the USSR, according to the Argumenty i Fakty newspaper.

Pavel Sukhoi was born in Glubokoe (Belorussia) in the family of a teacher; the ancestors of the aircraft designer were peasants. He showed an aptitude for science in a young age and studied at the Moscow Higher Technical School.

During the First World War and the October Revolution, he stood at the origins of Soviet aviation. In the 1920s, Sukhoi ended up in the design department of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute at the invitation of Andrey Tupolev. Within a few years, he developed his first aircraft.

Su-2, created by Sukhoi, took part in the battles of the Great Patriotic War. The design bureau under the leadership of Pavel Sukhoi developed over 50 aircraft, about half of them were mass-produced. Sukhoi's technique in different years set world records for range, altitude and flight speed.
