Andrei Konchalovsky's new film is included in the main competition program of the Venice Film Festival, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the director of one of the most prestigious film forums Alberto Barbera, Konchalovsky is one of the most interesting Russian filmmakers. Barbera recalled that he took part in the film festival four times and was honored with the Silver Lion award three times. There is no doubt, Barbera added, that Konchalovsky will be able to surprise everyone this time too.
Konchalovsky will bring his film Dear Comrades to Venice. It tells the story of a little-known episode from the history of the Soviet Union. The main role in the film is played by the director's wife Yulia Vysotskaya.
The plot of the picture is based on a real story that took place in the early sixties in Novocherkassk. Workers in one of the factories demanded higher wages and went on strike. The protest action covered the entire electric locomotive plant, almost 5,000 people joined it. The strikers blocked the railroad of allied significance, and spontaneous riots began. The crowd tried to seize the building of the city committee. Troops were brought into the city to suppress the protest. Information about the victims was classified. According to official data, almost 30 people died, about a hundred were injured.
Earlier, it was assumed that the film would be released in the spring, but due to restrictions aimed at combating the coronavirus, the event had to be postponed to a later date.
