Russia approves transfer of Miroslav's Gospel sheet to Serbia

08.07.2020

The Federation Council has approved a draft law on the transfer of Miroslav's Gospel sheet to Serbia in exchange for Roerich's paintings, the website of the Ministry of Culture reports. Earlier, the law was supported by the State Duma.

Moscow and Belgrade agreed on the exchange of relics during the visit of the Russian President to Serbia in early 2019.

According to the Minister of Culture and Mass Media of Serbia Vladan Vukosavlevich, the issue of returning the 166th sheet of the ancient manuscript to Belgrade has been discussed for many years. And Roerich's paintings were considered missing since 1941, until two years ago they were accidentally noticed in the National Museum of Serbia. The head of the department recalled that the agreement must be approved by the parliamentarians of both countries.

The Gospel consists of 171 leaves. It was written in 1180 for Prince Miroslav Zavidovich - the founder of the Serbian dynasty Nemanjic. For many years the unique book was kept on Athos, and only in the 19th century it was presented to the Serbian king. The manuscript is currently in the National Museum of Serbia. There is one page of the Gospel in Russia. It was brought from Athos in the second half of the 19th century.
