Russia relives Olympic Games of 1980

The "Olympic" bear and other symbols of the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games have once again been placed in the Russian capital as part of the action timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Games. The anniversary of the Olympics was also celebrated in other cities of Russia, Ren-TV channel reports.

The "Moscow - 1980" inscription is placed on the facade of the Cosmos Hotel, while a video clip dedicated to the Olympics was broadcast on the Ostankino TV tower. It shows the "Olympic" bear flying into the sky during the closing ceremony of the Games.

Everyone can learn the history of the Moscow Olympics thanks to the quest posted on the Discover Moscow website. Internet users were asked to answer questions of a quiz reflecting the history of the Games. According to the organizers, the quest will help people of the middle and older generations remember the events and atmosphere of the Games, while young people will learn a lot of new and interesting things.

Unique photographs, live broadcasts, videos with memories of participants and spectators of the Moscow Olympic Games will be posted from July 19 to August 3 on the pages of the Russian Olympic Committee in social networks. 

The multimedia project called Moscow-80: Retro-Tube has united nearly ten editorial teams of Sputnik agency operating in the countries of the former USSR. The Moscow office also joined it. The focus is not on sports and medals, but on the atmosphere of Olympic Moscow.

Many formats are involved in the project. These are the memories of eyewitnesses, and the stories of athletes, which are supplemented by photographs that capture historical moments. Moscow-80: Retro-Tube is a mini-series. Among its hosts are Tina Kandelaki, Dmitry Puchkov (Goblin), Dmitry Guberniev and others. They will speak about the way Olympics influenced Soviet fashion, how the assortment of grocery stores changed. Also, viewers will find out how much the Olympics cost and how the special services and law enforcement agencies worked.

The opening ceremony of the 1980 Olympic Games took place in Moscow on July 19. Over 14 days of competition, 74 Olympic, 39 European and 36 world records were set. Soviet athletes won 195 awards, including 80 gold ones, and took first place in the team event.
