Selection of Anton Chekhov stories published online honoring his 160th birthday

Online project dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the writer Anton Chekhov is presented by the National Electronic Library. Admirers of Russian literature can get read Chekhov’s works on a specially created website.

"The doctor who wrote 300 works" project includes not only stories and plays of the Russian classic, but also the facts of his biography, as well as the memoirs of his contemporaries, the Culture.RF website reports.

On the website, one can find lifetime editions of Chekhov’s books in digitized form, taken from the funds of the Russian National Library. A separate section is devoted to the writer's letters, his photographs, theater posters, and biographical information.

Anton Chekhov was born on January 29, 1860, in Taganrog, a port city in southwestern Russia. He's famous as a playwright and  short stories writer. Apart of writing he was working as a full-time Doctor, saving many lives of simple people. Along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Chekhov is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre.
 
Festive events, performances, exhibitions and actions were held in honor of his anniversary in Russia and other countries.
