More than 20 countries will be represented at the next international chemistry olympiad. It bears the name of Dmitry Mendeleev, according to the Russian Education website. The tournament this year will be the 54th in a row. Due to restrictive measures aimed at counteracting the spread of coronavirus, the olympiad will be held online in the form of two theoretical stages. It will begin in two weeks, on July 13.

According to Stepan Kalmykov, who runs the chemistry department of Lomonosov Moscow State University, online technologies have already been developed during distance learning in Russian universities. He has no doubt that no restrictions will prevent the holding of such a large-scale event as the Mendeleev Olympiad.

Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad is a unique educational project that annually brings together gifted students from different countries. It is recognized as one of the most significant intellectual competitions among schoolchildren.

The Olympiad is traditionally held in late April - early May among schoolchildren from the CIS, Baltic countries and southeastern Europe. In 2019, schoolchildren from 29 countries fought for victory. For the first time, children from China, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia participated in the competition.

The test included three stages - two theoretical and an experimental one, in which students demonstrated their knowledge in various fields of chemistry and practical skills in a chemical laboratory.
