The Madeira (the autonomous region of Portugal) government is interested in the prosperity of the Russian community and will continue to maintain close relations with the diaspora, which invests in the local economy and develops business there. This was stated by the regional director for external cooperation of Madeira, Rui Abreu, the Russian-language Slovo newspaper Slovo reports.

According to official information, about one and a half thousand Russians live in Madeira. After a meeting with representatives of the diaspora, Rui Abreu announced the interest of local authorities in close relations with representatives of Russia who chose Madeira for life and business.

The official praised the contribution of the Russian community to the economic development of the island. Rui Abreu stressed that over the past five years, Russians have invested heavily in the region’s economy, which contributed to the well-being of the island and its inhabitants.

Abreu said that the Russian community was formed thanks to the Golden Visa program. The first wave of Russians was mainly involved in the construction sector, now representatives of the Russian diaspora are involved in the development of various areas of Madeira's economy.
