Russian Daniil Dubov wins online rapid chess tournament

Russian grandmaster Daniil Dubov won the international rapid chess tournament Abbey Rapid Challenge, which, due to the coronavirus pandemic, took place online. In the decisive match, the Russian defeated the American Hikaru Nakamura. The world champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway) also took part in the tournament, TASS reports.

Competitions gathered twelve titled chess players. In addition to the athletes mentioned, the tournament was attended by Russian Sergey Karjakin and Alexander Grischuk, as well as chess players from China, Poland, Iran and other countries.

The finalists Dubov and Nakamura held three meetings with each other. In the first two games, the chess players exchanged victories, in the third the Russian turned out to be stronger, and defeated the opponent in an additional game. Two years ago, Daniil Dubov won the world title in rapid chess, in 2016 he became one of the winners of the tournament.

Russkiy Mir reported that two weeks earlier a Russian took second place at the Steinitz International Memorial, which also took place online. At the end of the tournament, Magnus Carlsen snatched the victory from Dubov.
