Pupils of the Sunday school and parishioners of the Sergievsky parish in Stockholm paid tribute to the crew members of the Som submarine of the Russian imperial fleet, which sank off the Swedish coast in 1916. The requiem took place on the shore near the site of the tragedy, the website of the Union of Russian Societies in Sweden reports.

The Som vessel died on May 23 in a collision with the Swedish steamer Ongermanland. According to the captain of the Swedish vessel, the Som hit the underwater part of the Ongermanland and no longer surfaced. According to another hypothesis, the ship rammed the Russian boat in order to avoid inspection.

All eighteen crew members - sixteen sailors and two officers - died because of the crash. The location of the boat was discovered a year before the centenary of the tragedy, the wreckage of the boat was found by Swedish divers.

Over the past five years, research has been ongoing to explore the possibility of raising the boat from the bottom. Negotiations are also taking place between representatives of Russia and Sweden on the future fate of the remains of the submarine.

Russian and Swedish historians call the Som a unique boat that has become the prototype of modern submarines and an important link in the development of the submarine fleet. Historians are convinced that the research of the submaribe can reveal new facts about the history of the First World War.
