All the UN-member countries should abandon the sanctions at least for the time of the difficult epidemiological situation, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper writes. The head of the international organization supported the call made by Moscow. Russia reminded the international community that unilateral sanctions adversely affect the health systems of vulnerable countries.

The Secretary General noted that he completely supported the idea of establishing cooperation between countries and consolidation in countering the global challenge.

Guterres thanked Moscow for supporting the UN Global Ceasefire Initiative as part of the joint counteraction to COVID-19.

Russian politicians have already called on Western countries to abandon sanctions. The Russian Foreign Ministry, calling the sanctions national egoism, has repeatedly warned that they interfere with the effective fight against coronavirus infection. Russian diplomats noted that Washington did not allow the delivery of medical equipment to Cuba. Moscow also expressed concern about the state of Syrian health care.

In April, a number of UN states blocked the adoption of a draft declaration, which called on partners to consolidate efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection. In addition, the declaration offered to provide support to developing countries, particularly by lifting of unilateral sanctions against them.
