Foreign Ministers of the CIS countries have discussed a joint fight against coronavirus infection, RIA Novosti reports. This issue was discussed at the meeting of the countries of the foreign ministers. It took place on Tuesday, May 12, in a video conference format.

According to Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov, the meeting participants agreed that the pace of work on agreements in the context of the fight against coronavirus should be increased. Rospotrebnadzor proposed two draft documents, he added.

Lavrov noted that the CIS is responding in time to the changes that are taking place. The coordination council for the sanitary protection of territories from infectious diseases has proved itself well. Sergey Lavrov underlined that its creation is not related to the current epidemiological situation.

The council has met twice in recent months. The next meeting will take place soon, it is scheduled for May. It also became known that the CIS summit is planned to be held in Tashkent on October 16.

The meeting participants agreed that it is necessary to improve the work of existing mechanisms, as well as strengthen the regulatory framework of the CIS on the prevention of the infectious diseases control.

The Minister expressed confidence that the pandemic affects various aspects of international relations, and the work of regional organizations. “In a geopolitical context, this situation tests the ability of states and their associations to take collective action in critical conditions,” the Russian minister summed up.
