Even the emergence of a common threat did not prompt Western countries to abandon politicized approaches and narrow interests, according to the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN. The diplomats recalled that earlier, some Western states decided to block the draft declaration on solidarity in the fight against coronavirus at the UN General Assembly. The document was proposed by Moscow and co-authored by another 34 UN member countries, TASS reports.

The fundamental idea of the document is a call for partners to consolidate efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. In addition, the declaration offered to provide support to developing countries, including through the lifting of unilateral sanctions against them.

The authors of the document note that it is necessary to achieve universal access to health services and increase drug production. International financial institutions were invited to support countries in need with urgent humanitarian assistance. The declaration condemned manifestations of racism and xenophobia in the context of the fight against infection and emphasized the need to respect human rights.

Everyone who blocked the adoption of the declaration once again showed that their calls for solidarity and unification to fight the coronavirus remain only a propaganda device. It is impossible to help with one hand, and to squeeze the noose around the neck of those who are helping with the other, Russian diplomats emphasized.

Nevertheless, Moscow will continue to take measures aimed at uniting the international community in the fight against coronavirus.
