Some African countries are asking Moscow to assist them in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, TASS reports. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian authorities are studying these appeals, taking into account the situation that has developed in each state.

Africa is in need of medical equipment, including mechanical ventilation devices. African states also need test systems, disinfectants, masks, protective suits and other consumables.

The Foreign Ministry notes that while the prevalence of coronavirus is not too high in African countries, except South Africa, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. But the pandemic problem is also very worrying for other states on the continent.

The situation is complicated by difficulties in the social and economic spheres in many of them, high population density, underdeveloped healthcare system, conflicts, unprotected borders and uncontrolled migration. All this can lead to an increase in morbidity.

The pandemic can adversely affect the implementation of large-scale tasks to overcome poverty, ensure sustainable development, and the implementation of integration projects facing African states.

In recent years, Russia has provided significant assistance to African countries both in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and in combating the spread of infectious diseases, especially Ebola.
