Russian authorities have introduced a temporary ban on passenger flights to all countries of the world, RIA Novosti reports.

The restrictive measures are aimed at countering the spread of coronavirus infection. They enter into force today, March 23. Flights to all states are suspended.

As an exception, 146 flights to capital cities or major cities will continue to operate, one flight per country. Charter flights will be organized to take Russians home.

Aeroflot also closed flights to those countries where an emergency regime is in force and the entry is prohibited for foreigners.

Russkiy Mir reported that earlier air communication had been limited with all countries of the European Union, China, South Korea and Iran. Moscow also imposed restrictions on the entry into the country of citizens of other countries and stateless persons.

According to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, all these steps meet the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The Prime Minister indicated that the restrictions were caused by special circumstances, and emphasized that they were only temporary. Other states impose corresponding restrictions.
