Russian and Turkish presidents have agreed on a ceasefire in Idlib (Syria) along the contact line. Vladimir Putin received Recep Erdogan on Thursday, March 5, their conversation lasted for more than six hours, according to RIA Novosti.

The presidents approved a document aimed at stabilizing the situation in Syria. In addition to the cessation of hostilities, it was decided to create a security corridor around the M4 highway. This road is of strategic importance for the country. The width of the corridor will reach six kilometers on each side. The track will be patrolled jointly by Russian and Turkish military.

According to Vladimir Putin, the reached agreements will become a solid foundation for resolving the situation. The Russian leader said that Moscow does not always agree with Ankara’s assessments of what is happening in Syria. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that in times of crisis the parties can always find common ground.

Putin and Erdogan noted that it is unacceptable to water down the fighting against terrorism. The cooperation on this issue will continue within the Astana format. The Federation Council, in turn, called the outcome of the negotiations optimistic.

According to Senator Konstantin Kosachev, the meeting will provide an opportunity for the development of bilateral agreements on the Idlib de-escalation zone. At the same time, the politician doubts that a conversation between Putin and Erdogan will protect against new crises in Syria.
