The problem with Washington’s refusal to issue visas to Russian diplomats to the UN remains unresolved, said Russia's MFA spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to her, the actions of the American authorities are an obstacle to the work of Russian delegations, RIA Novosti reports.

Zakharova called the current situation critical and recalled that a meeting of the UN committee on relations with the host country had recently been held. It once again showed that progress on this issue is imperceptible.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Washington was taking a deliberate course to aggravate the situation around the issuance of American visas. And the situation continues to degrade. The ministry recalled that Moscow has repeatedly appealed to the American authorities to remove obstacles to obtaining visas. Nonetheless, denials of visas are becoming widespread.

A few years ago, Russian diplomats, who were sent on business trips to the Russian embassy and to the UN mission, had to face a similar situation. Back then  the staff of the UN Secretariat could not get visas. In 2019, a scandal with members of the Russian delegation who did not attend the meeting of the UN General Assembly became very notorious.

The Russian Foreign Ministry suggested that the US authorities are trying to use these restrictions to select participants in UN events. “This is a gross violation of US international obligations arising from the status of the host country of the UN,” said Maria Zakharova.
